First of all to understand Zartan you gotta understand who Zartan was before.
Now Zartan was born to a one-legged bitch of a mother. He was always ashamed of this. And then right after that he's adopted by this man, Tito Garcia, he's a small time gun runner and an underground cage fight promoter. So he puts Zartan into training. They see Zartan's good. He is damn good. But then he had the fight of his life.
They pit him against his brother Zoltan. And Zartan said "no man that's my brother, I can't fight Zoltan" but they made him fight anyway, and Zartan, he killed Zoltan. So Zartan said "that's it!. He called off all his fights, and he started doing crack, and he freaked out. Then in a rage, he collapsed, and woke up on a pirate ship.
Tito had sold him into slavery. So Zartan said to the Captain "Hey, Look at me!" . The captain said "Sure". Zartan then snapped the captain's neck and said "I'm the captain NOW!" . And so he was.
