i be rum-eye bates, cap'n of the piorate ship 'THE FILTHY WHORE'. she is scrambled on those rocks out there and nary of me crew survived -- unless i'm thinkin' that scoundrel 'killin' mcGee' might by miracle pulled his worthless hide to shore. he has the luck of a devil, that one. i'm livin' on berries and grubs in this hard dark wilderness. my one hope is to gain or take a ship, and leave this place. but i am alive and i have a cutless in me hands, so things could be the worser.
