On his last tour of duty, Captain Cook was heavily traumatized. Since then, he suffered from PTSD. He was honorably discharged and sent into early retirement. Inofficially, he was discharged because his mental disorder turned him into an alienated, dangerous and paranoid soldier. A formerly quiet, controlled officer suddenly became trigger-happy, not at all reluctant to use his rifle even on civilians. In addition, his outbreaks of fury were soon notorious among the troops under his command.

Capt. Cook felt rejected and misunderstood when he was discharged from active duty. He refused the prescribed medical treatment and over the time, he became psychotic, suffering from the delusion that he was the reincarnation of his famous namesake, Captain Cook the navigator and explorer.

It became his strong belief that he had to continue Cook's work of claiming native islands for the Crown, so he grabbed his weapons and combat gear and went to Shartak.

In addition, his psychotic past-life-memories told him that his former alter ego had been too sympathetic, too mild, too appreciative of the local natives - which eventually lead to his violent death on the island of Hawaii.
