After years of robbing and eating unlucky travellers, the Bean family's cave was finally discovered by soldiers belonging to King James (the I or the VI, take your pick), and the Beans were executed without trial. However, the Scottish territories were hardly an organized place in the 13th century, and whether or not all 48 Beans were indeed killed, or even existed, is no longer known for sure.
